Youth Free Helmet Program

Typically, BWANH through a grant from NHDOT, offers in-class presentations for grades 3-8 on Youth Biking & Walking Safety.  Our certified instructors travel to elementary schools around NH and put on a 45-minute interactive presentation which the students love.  With the current challenge of hybrid and remote learning, it is difficult to schedule classes this fall.  We are optimistic that spring will bring a relief to the constraints of this pandemic and we will be able to return to the classroom.

In a recent blog on The League of American Bicyclists website people (adults & most notably, children) “across the United States and around the world found an outlet through bicycling. Old bikes emerged from garages as it was easy to socially distance on bikes. Kids and their parents became more comfortable as there was less traffic on the roads in March and April, and across the country groups of kids, often siblings, began to venture out beyond their neighborhoods, discovering the joy and freedom of biking.  A generation of kids now views bikes as freedom machines, their escape for much of the drudgery of the pandemic.

School districts are also beginning to see biking as a solution to challenges they are confronting during the pandemic. School transportation departments, in an effort to address social distancing on school buses, are looking to biking as an option. Ahead of opening schools, some districts provided routing information, working to identify barriers to kids biking to school, and encouraging families to try routes before school opens and traffic increases.”

BUT to preserve this freedom and maintain safety, HELMETS are even more important than ever!

As an interim measure, BWANH has secured approval from NHDOT to offer an extended Helmet Program this fall.  We are excited to offer FREE helmets for children who need them.  If you know of a school-age child who needs a bike helmet, please reach out to us at info@bwanh.org.
