Ride of Silence

On Sunday October 3rd, a Ride of Silence was held in Kingston in honor of fallen bicyclist and retired Hudson Police Sergeant Donna Briggs, who was killed while riding her bike in late September. Donna was riding as part of her training to raise money for the Unity Ride, a charity bike ride to raise funds for families of Law Enforcement officials who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Donna was riding to honor fallen officer Mel Keddy, who died 26 years ago on the same stretch of road.

This event was spearheaded by local community members who were compelled to shed some visibility on the tragedy of bicyclists being hit by motor vehicle drivers. Family members, friends and colleagues of Donna Briggs attended the event. The Kingston Police department provided a police escort to the crowd of over 100 bicyclists participating in the silent ride around Kingston center. Several local bike advocates spoke at the event, including  former BWA Exec Director and current Concord Lake Sunapee Rail Trail President Tim Blagden, president of the Granite State Rail Trail and Gus’ Bike Shop owner Jeff Latimer, and BWANH Board President Paula Bedard. Local bicyclist Lori Watkins was a primary organizer of the event. Lori has a personal connection, after losing her nephew several years ago in a similar tragedy.  WMUR covered the event here.
