New London Bike Walk Coalition Moves Forward

The New London Bike Walk Coalition (NLBWC) was originally founded in 2020 by a small group of volunteers committed to improving access and safety of walking and biking activities in the immediate environs of New London. In 2022, this group became an official affiliate of BWANH. Coalition members include New London Hospital-Dartmouth Health, New London Police Benevolent Association (NLPBA), Colby Sawyer College and Village Sports. The first successful initiative concluded with the installation of 14 Share the Road signs on major thoroughfares and at major intersections. The NLPBA and the New London Department of Public Works were instrumental in the implementation of this project.

NLBWC also launched a Bike and Walk Community Survey in the summer of 2021. Of the more than 355
respondents, 67% rated increasing biking and walking access and safety as a high priority for community
investment. The survey, in addition to other data, has been useful in promoting projects such as a
proposed Downtown Business Bike Walk Loop that is currently under consideration by Town officials
and community advocates.

NLBWC also organizes and participates in community events. The 2020 and 2021 Be Bike Safe events held at Kearsarge Regional Elementary School engaged young children and families in fun activities, such as navigating a bike safety training course, and provided free children’s bike helmets. With the cooperation of the Concord Sunapee Trail Association, the community has obtained a state-of-the-art
covered bike rack on loan in 2021 and 2022. The covered bike rack placement has generated interest in installing additional bike racks in the downtown vicinity which is on tap for summer 2023.
