LABX Benefits from Cycling Resurgence

Laconia Area Bicycle Exchange, one of BWANH’s six affiliates, found the silver lining in the COVID pandemic!  This shop, located at 92 Salem St. in Laconia, features many types and levels of bicycles and in 2020 they saw both record numbers of donations and sales.  They are dedicated to providing inexpensive, alternative transportation in the form of refurbished bicycles to adults who could benefit from greater mobility in both their professional and personal life.

LABX is staffed solely with volunteers:  it is run by long-standing Executive Director, John P. Rogers, who in 2018 received the Spirit of NH Volunteer Award.  He has been assisted at the shop for a number of years by Cliff King and Mark Townsend.  In 2020, they welcomed two new volunteers, Bob from Manchester and Chris from Gilmanton.   Also sharing their expertise was Joe Bush, a collector of bikes and accessories and Mr. Al who regularly shines up the handlebars on bikes for sale.

John said “we had an interesting and busy year. We received many bicycle donations, parts and accessories from many thoughtful and generous donors who believe in our work in the community. Unexpectedly, we had quite a few top of the line models donated  in 2020 and the sales of those helped to secure funds to cover winter  rent payments when the shop is closed. In the past 7 years, typical sales during their season from mid-April to mid-October average around $4,000.  2020 sales topped out at $10,500!  LABX extends their sincere gratitude to all donors and volunteers!

In addition to their great sales, LABX applied for and was awarded a $,2500. grant from Granite State Wheelers to support their efforts.  Most of those funds were utilized to buy parts and accessories as well as improvements to their shop space and equipment.

John Rogers has been the life-blood of this organization founding this non-profit in 2013 to help the citizens of the Lakes Region with their transportation needs.  He is looking for a new face to head up LABX and you can find the job description on their website https://labe.bike/.   This is a volunteer position, but comes with lots of rewards!
