“Electric motorcycles” on NH rail trails

Have you seen vehicles that look like motorcycles on rail trails? Not all, but many of
these high-powered and fast “Out of Class Electric Vehicles” can go 50-60 MPH in seconds, have up to a 16 HP motor, no pedaling required, and have no state or local-level regulation or enforcement.  Because so many people call (and sell) these machines as “e-bikes” that do not require registration, drivers license, or insurance, all true Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes (one HP max) and their riders are getting a bad name.  Class 1 & 2 with a max assisted speed of 20 MPH are allowed on NH rail trails; Class 3 with a 28 MPH max are for road use. The Bike-Walk Alliance of NH, Granite State Wheelers bicycle club and NHRTC plan to file legislation so state laws can regulate use of these machines — and make our roads and trails safer for everyone.  Even if police wanted to take action today, they can’t as no “law” is being violated.

For these reasons, BWANH is evaluating new legislation that would make laws clearer regarding banning these types of vehicles from rail trails, and certain other areas (bike-ped accommodations) that allow bicyclists and pedestrians.  Stay tuned!
