Bike the North Country

Bike the North Country, through generous donations and a grant from the Tillotson Foundation, recently donated a fully equipped bike to the Bethlehem Police Department. Through discussions with Police Chief DeMoranville, and some of his officers, they expressed interest in a police bike so they could ride the local trails and help riders in need, or worse, get to an injured rider quickly. They also love the idea of getting out of their cars and getting some exercise while patrolling. A true win-win in their mind. They’re also hoping to ride the Main Street/downtown area including the ball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts and gazebo areas to be more in touch with residents and visitors. The whole idea of reducing emissions by driving less while being more visible fits into Bethlehem’s green mantra – Just Be Green.

After discussions with Bike the North Country about the idea, funding was sought from a variety of sources. A donor gave their Specialized bike for the initiative, and then other donations and grants funded all the gear needed including police lights, repair and tool kits, first aid kit, bike bags and fenders.

Overall, this is another big step forward for cycling in the Tri-Town area as all three towns, Bethlehem, Franconia and Littleton, now have bikes for the Police Departments so they can reduce emissions, be healthier, and be closer and more accessible to people who may need help in the downtown areas and on the trails.
