The Bicycle Coalition of Maine is working with the state and the Efficiency Maine Trust to create a statewide rebate program. On June 8, Governor Mills of Maine signed into law LD 256, a bill to add e-bikes to Efficiency Maine Trust’s rebate program. E-bikes would diversify the modes of transportation available.
E-bikes provide effective, reliable transportation within a 5-10 miles radius of a person’s home. In Maine, 75% of car trips in Maine are within this radius. Cargo e-bicycles and commuter specific models are both useful types of e-bikes. This e-bike rebate program makes technology more accessible to a larger population of people. E-bikes also help reduce global warming emissions.
South Portland in Maine launched an e-bike rebate program in Summer 2022, and Portland launched a program in April 2023. While these programs serve a large metro area, Maine needs a statewide program so that rural residents also have access to the benefits provided by e-bikes.
